A plain Ebony disc at the ear, and below it a half-round boat built from three woods.

Udita is made from Boxwood, Padauk and Ebony, three of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards; the Padauk is the red hardwood from the same bench; the Boxwood is used for fittings and for the makers' own tools. All three reach us as offcuts from that work. Read how the wood gets here.

The boat is three woods joined. Strips of each are cut and bonded one against the next, then the whole piece is shaped into its curve and polished back as one. Every band of colour is a different species meeting at a join — nothing is stained, dyed or laid on top.

A half-round is a flat top and a curved base: the sun exactly half-risen above a horizon, which is where the name comes from. Udita means risen. Setting the flat edge uppermost gives the drop a solid line to hang from and lets the curve carry the weight below it.

Three species in one small piece is the most we use, and it is the reason this pair picks up almost any outfit colour — pale gold, deep red and near-black are all present.

Details ▾

Pair weight: about 10 g.

Findings are metal alloy. Sold as one pair.

Handcrafted in Kolkata, India.

Styling ▾

Warm and broad, these are statement wooden earrings for festive wear — the Padauk gives them enough colour for a silk saree, and the Ebony keeps them from looking rustic.

Wear with hair up so the full width of the boat is visible, and keep the neckline simple.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight — Padauk's red deepens with light exposure.
  • Keep it dry — take it off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Are the colours painted or stained? ▾

Neither. Each band is a different wood at its own natural colour — Boxwood pale gold, Padauk deep red, Ebony near-black.

Are the bands laid on the surface? ▾

No. They are joins. Separate pieces of wood are bonded together, then the boat is shaped and polished back as one piece.

Which three woods are these? ▾

Boxwood, Padauk and Ebony — the pale, the red and the black, all from the same instrument workshop.

Will a drop this broad be heavy? ▾

The pair weighs about 10 g. The same shape in metal would pull on the earlobe within an hour.

Will the colours change over time? ▾

Slightly. Padauk deepens most, the others a little. Kept out of direct sunlight the piece ages evenly and holds its polish.
