A slender Boxwood leaf, its veining engraved by hand, finished in green.
Taruni is cut from Boxwood, one of the woods that passes through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments, where it is used for fittings and for the makers' own bench tools. It reaches us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.
The leaf is long and narrow, tapering to a point, with a midrib running its full length and veins branching off on both sides. Every one of those lines is engraved — cut into the wood by hand before any colour is near it.
The green is worked over the engraved surface. It is not a dye soaked through the wood and not a line filled into the cuts alone: the colour sits across the face, catching in the engraved channels so the veining reads darker than the body around it. The grain of the Boxwood stays visible underneath, which is the reason to colour wood rather than moulded acrylic — on acrylic the colour has nothing to sit on.

Styling ▾
Green is the colour almost nobody has in a jewellery drawer, which makes this the pair that finishes an outfit nothing else matches — olive, mustard, cream, rust, and any handloom with green in the border.
The leaf is narrow enough to wear with hair down without disappearing, and light enough to forget through a full day.
Looking after it ▾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight — a coloured surface holds its tone best away from strong light.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing. Do not scrub the coloured face.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the veining printed on? ▾
No. Every vein is cut into the wood by hand before the colour goes on. Run a fingertip down the leaf and you can feel the midrib and the branches.
Is the green natural to the wood? ▾
No, and we would rather say so. Boxwood is pale gold on its own; the green is a colour worked over the engraved surface by hand. The grain stays visible through it.
Are both earrings identical? ▾
Close, but not identical. Each leaf is engraved and coloured by hand, so the veining falls slightly differently on one than the other.
Will they be heavy on my ears? ▾
The pair weighs about 10 g. A narrow leaf in wood is among the lightest shapes we make.
How do I keep the colour looking right? ▾
Keep them out of direct sunlight, wipe with a dry cloth rather than a damp one, and keep perfume and moisturiser away from the face of the leaf.
