A domed Ebony disc at the ear, and below it a broad teardrop striped down its length in Boxwood and Ebony.

Shalini is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.

The stripes are the two woods themselves, cut and laid together and then worked back to a single polished face. Nothing is stained and nothing is printed: the black band is Ebony and the gold band is Boxwood, and the line where they meet is a join rather than a drawn edge.

The teardrop is the widest shape in the striped range, and the width is what makes it work. On a narrow bar, lengthwise stripes read as a pattern; across a shape that swells in the middle, the same stripes curve with the silhouette and the drop looks fuller than it is.

Styling ▾

A broad drop needs room, so this pair rewards hair worn up and a neckline that is not already busy. Against a plain silk or a solid-colour kurta it becomes the whole statement.

Black and pale gold is close to a neutral, which is why a piece this size still works with strong colour — it will sit against a red or a deep green without fighting it.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep it dry — take it off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Please film an unboxing video. It is required for any claim about a damaged, defective or incorrect item, which must be raised within 48 hours of delivery.

Are the black stripes painted on? ▾

No. The black is Ebony and the gold is Boxwood — two woods at their own colour, cut and laid together. Nothing is stained, dyed or printed, so the stripes cannot fade or rub off.

Will a drop this size be heavy? ▾

The pair weighs about 10 g. That is the reason we make statement shapes in wood — the same teardrop in metal would be felt within an hour.

Are both earrings identical? ▾

Very close. The grain runs differently through every piece of wood, so the pair is matched rather than duplicated.

What should I wear these with? ▾

Hair up, a plain neckline, and no necklace competing at the same level. The drop is wide enough to carry an outfit on its own.

Will the colour fade? ▾

Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
