A pale Maple teardrop ruled down its length with fine lines of red Padauk.

Saanjh is made from Maple and Padauk, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Maple is the pale wood used for violin backs, sides and necks; the Padauk is the red hardwood that comes through the same bench. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.

The lines are Padauk, set into the Maple and polished back level — which makes this one of the few pieces where the fine lines are red rather than black. Almost everything else in the range rules a pale wood with Ebony; here the line is warm, so the contrast is softer and the whole drop reads gentler.

Saanjh means dusk, and the colouring follows it: pale ground, warm red lines, nothing sharp.

Neither colour is dyed. Maple is that pale on its own and Padauk that red.

Details ▾

Woods: Maple with Padauk lines, responsibly repurposed exotic hardwoods.

Construction: cut wood set in and polished back.

Form: broad teardrop drop, ruled lengthwise.

Pair weight: about 10 g.

Findings are metal alloy. Sold as one pair.

Handcrafted in Kolkata, India.

Styling ▾

Warm and low-contrast — lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear that sit naturally with cream, rust, mustard and brown. With no black anywhere in the piece, they soften an outfit rather than sharpening it.

The broad teardrop shows best with hair up and a simple neckline.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight — Padauk's red deepens with light exposure.
  • Keep it dry — take it off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing — a pale wood shows a mark more readily than a dark one.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Are the red lines painted on? ▾

No. They are Padauk — a wood that is naturally this red — set into the Maple and polished back level. The colour is the wood's own and cannot be rubbed off.

Why are the lines red rather than black? ▾

Because this piece uses Padauk rather than Ebony. It is one of the few in the range with warm lines, which makes the contrast softer than our black-on-pale pieces.

Which woods are these? ▾

Maple and Padauk — the pale wood of violin backs and the red hardwood from the same workshop bench.

What colours do these suit? ▾

Cream, rust, mustard and brown especially. With no black in the piece, it sits in the same warm family as those tones.

Will the colour change over time? ▾

Padauk deepens with age and light, which most people prefer. Kept out of direct sunlight the change is slow and even.
