🔮 Geometry with Purpose — Circles, Stars, Squares & Curves

A pale Boxwood drop with a single bold wave of Ebony veneer winding down its length.

Queta is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.

Almost everything else we make is built from straight lines — bars, squares, lattices, stripes. Queta is the exception. One dark band runs from the top of the drop to the bottom, turning back on itself as it goes, so the earring carries a curve where the rest of the range carries edges.

That wave is veneer: a fine leaf of real Ebony, cut to the curve and laid onto the Boxwood body. It is the same technique used on instrument cases and fine cabinetry, and it is the reason the shape can be a flowing curve at all — a line like this cut from solid wood would have to be chased around every bend. The black is the wood's own colour, not stain or paint.

The curve is also why the piece reads as soft from a distance despite the strong contrast. A straight black line on a pale ground looks graphic and deliberate; the same line bent into a wave looks like movement, and the eye follows it down instead of stopping at it.

Styling ▾

The wave gives this pair an easier, less formal character than the geometric pieces, which makes it a good everyday choice — jeans and a shirt as readily as a cotton saree.

It also works against curved necklines and soft draping fabric, where a hard-edged square can look out of place. Hair up or down both suit it; the shape is bold enough to survive being partly covered.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep it dry. A veneered surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the edges are where a veneer is most vulnerable.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Please film an unboxing video. It is required for any claim about a damaged, defective or incorrect item, which must be raised within 48 hours of delivery.

Is the black wave painted on? ▾

No. It is Ebony — a wood that is black on its own — cut as a fine veneer and laid onto the Boxwood. Real wood, not stain, ink or paint, so the colour cannot be rubbed off.

What does veneer mean here? ▾

A very thin leaf of solid wood, cut to shape and laid onto the body beneath it — the method used on instrument cases and fine cabinetry. It is what allows a flowing curve like this one. Keep the piece dry and avoid knocking the edges and it will hold for years.

Are these too bold for everyday wear? ▾

The contrast is strong but the shape is soft, and at about 10 g you can wear them from morning to night. Most people find the curve easier to live with daily than a hard geometric shape.

Are both earrings identical? ▾

Very close. The grain of the wood runs differently through each one, so the pair is matched rather than duplicated.

Will the colour fade? ▾

Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
