A round Boxwood disc engraved edge to edge with open flowers, the blooms standing pale against a darker ground.

Priyasi is cut from Boxwood, one of the woods that passes through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments, where it is used for fittings and for the makers' own bench tools. It reaches us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable, in pieces about the size of a pair of earrings. Read how the wood gets here.

The whole face is engraved. Broad open blooms, smaller buds and leaves run from the centre out to the rim with almost no plain ground left between them, and the cut areas read darker than the polished surface around them — so the flowers come forward in pale gold and the background falls back. One disc hangs from each hook. There is no second element and no second wood.

Engraving at this density only works on a wood this fine. Boxwood holds a cut line a fraction of a millimetre wide without the edge crumbling, which is why instrument makers reach for it, and it is the reason the petals keep their shape instead of blurring into one another.

Styling ā–¾

A single round disc is the easiest statement shape to wear — it has no points and no direction, so it sits well whichever way it turns. The floral face does the work, which makes Priyasi a good match for plain fabric: a solid-colour kurta, a plain cotton saree, a plain shirt.

Against a heavily printed or embroidered outfit the engraving has to compete, so these look their best where the clothes are quiet.

Looking after it ā–¾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the floral pattern printed on? ā–¾

No. Every flower is cut into the wood by hand. Run a finger across the face and you can feel the pattern — there is nothing on the surface to scratch off or wear away.

Are the two earrings identical? ā–¾

Close, but not identical. Each disc is engraved by hand, so the flowers fall slightly differently on one than the other. That is the difference between a piece that was cut and one that was moulded.

Will they be heavy on my ears? ā–¾

The pair weighs about 10 g. A disc this size in metal would pull noticeably; in wood it is light enough to forget through a full day.

Which wood is this? ā–¾

Boxwood, and only Boxwood. The pale gold is the wood's own colour, deepened by cutting and polishing.

Will the colour fade? ā–¾

Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, Boxwood darkens slightly over the years and holds its polish.
