An angular dark shape at the ear, and below it a teardrop banded across the shoulder.

Palasha is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.

The upper element is not a disc or a square but a cut, many-sided shape with straight edges meeting at angles — the only element of its kind in the range, and the reason this pair looks less symmetrical than its neighbours.

The bands on the drop are joined wood. Strips of Boxwood are cut and bonded between the Ebony, then the teardrop is shaped and polished back as a single piece. The pale lines are a different species meeting the dark one, not a mark on a surface.

Angles above, a closed curve below, and the banding sitting exactly where the two meet: the pale stripes do the work of joining two shapes that otherwise have nothing in common.

Details ▾

Woods: Boxwood and Ebony, responsibly repurposed exotic hardwoods.

Construction: the woods cut, joined and polished back.

Form: angular upper element above a banded teardrop.

Pair weight: about 10 g.

Findings are metal alloy. Sold as one pair.

Handcrafted in Kolkata, India.

Styling ▾

Mostly dark with a few pale lines, these are statement wooden earrings for festive wear that behave like a neutral — they sit against a bright silk or a deep-toned saree equally well.

Hair up suits them: the angular top sits close to the lobe and is easy to miss otherwise.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep it dry — take it off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the corners of the upper shape are the part to protect.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the black wood dyed? ▾

No. It is Ebony, which is naturally this colour — the same wood used for violin fingerboards. Nothing is stained or dyed.

Are the pale bands laid on the surface? ▾

No. They are joins — separate pieces of Boxwood bonded between the Ebony, then shaped and polished back as one piece.

Do these work with black clothes? ▾

Yes. A mostly dark earring reads cleanly against black, and the pale bands keep it from disappearing entirely.

Are they heavy? ▾

The pair weighs about 10 g. A drop this size in metal would be felt on the earlobe within an hour.

Will the colour fade? ▾

Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
