A long pale Boxwood oval, crossed by a single band of black Ebony.
Pakhi is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.
One shape, one line. The drop is a smooth elongated oval, pointed at both ends, and the only mark on it is a dark band laid across the upper part of the face. There is no pattern to read, no second element below it and no colour.
The band is Ebony, cut and laid onto the Boxwood, then polished back. It is real wood at its own colour — nothing stained, printed or painted — and the reason the edge where black meets gold is so clean is that it is a join between two woods rather than a drawn line.
Placing the band high rather than through the centre is the whole decision. Across the middle it would halve the oval and the drop would read as two shapes; set above the middle it divides the face unevenly, and the longer part below carries the eye down to the point.

Styling ▾
This is the most minimal drop in the range, which makes it the one that goes with the most. A printed saree, a busy block-print kurta, a plain shirt — there is no pattern on the earring to argue with any of them.
The length reads well with hair up, and the narrow profile means it still shows with hair down.
Looking after it ▾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
- Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the edges are where laid wood is most vulnerable.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the black band painted on? ▾
No. It is Ebony — a wood that is black on its own — cut and laid onto the Boxwood, then polished back. Real wood, not ink or paint, so the colour cannot be rubbed off.
Will these go with printed clothes? ▾
Yes, better than most. There is no pattern on the earring, so nothing competes with a print.
Are they heavy? ▾
The pair weighs about 10 g. A drop this long in metal would be felt within an hour.
Are both earrings identical? ▾
Very close. The grain runs differently through every piece of wood, so the pair is matched rather than duplicated.
Will the colour fade? ▾
Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
