A pale Maple oval at the ear, and below it a broad axe-head drop in deep red Padauk.

Nakshika is made from Maple and Padauk, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Maple is the pale wood used for violin backs, sides and necks; the Padauk is the red hardwood that comes through the same bench. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.

Most of our two-part earrings put the dark element at the top. Nakshika inverts it: pale above, deep red below, so the weight of the colour sits at the bottom of the drop and the eye travels downward.

The upper oval is Maple, with fine veneer laid into its face — leaf-thin strips of wood cut and placed, then polished back. The lower shape is solid Padauk, cut to a broad flaring edge with the corners drawn up into points.

Red and cream is a warmer pairing than the black-and-gold we use most often, and it behaves differently: where Ebony reads as formal, Padauk reads as festive. Nothing is stained or dyed — both colours are the woods' own.

Details ▾

Woods: Maple and Padauk, responsibly repurposed exotic hardwoods.

Construction: cut wood veneer on the Maple oval; the Padauk drop is solid.

Form: pale oval above a broad flaring axe-head drop.

Pair weight: about 10 g.

Findings are metal alloy. Sold as one pair.

Handcrafted in Kolkata, India.

Styling ▾

These are statement wooden earrings for weddings and festive wear — the red carries against silk and gold work in a way a neutral cannot, and the scale holds up in a crowded room.

Wear with hair up and a plain neckline. Against maroon, rust, mustard and cream the Padauk sits in the same family; against deep green or indigo it reads as a deliberate contrast.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight — Padauk's red deepens with light exposure.
  • Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Please film an unboxing video. It is required for any claim about a damaged, defective or incorrect item, which must be raised within 48 hours of delivery.

Is the red wood stained or dyed? ▾

No. That is Padauk's own colour — the wood comes out of the log this red, with darker streaking running through it. Nothing is stained or painted.

Are the lines on the upper oval painted? ▾

No. They are wood veneer — leaf-thin strips cut and laid onto the Maple, then polished back. The colour is the wood's own.

Are these suitable for a wedding or a puja? ▾

Yes. The red reads as festive rather than formal, and at about 10 g the pair can be worn through a long function.

Will a drop this broad be heavy? ▾

The pair weighs about 10 g. A shape this wide in metal would pull on the earlobe within an hour.

Will the colour change over time? ▾

Padauk deepens with age and light, which most people prefer. Kept out of direct sunlight the change is slow and even.
