A pale Boxwood oval with an angular dark shape cut to form and laid across it.
Mohana is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work ā fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.
The dark shape is cut veneer, laid onto the face ā a leaf-thin piece of Ebony cut with its own outline, placed onto the Boxwood and polished back level.
It is set to one side rather than centred, and runs off the edge of the oval rather than sitting wholly inside it. That makes the piece read as a shape caught mid-movement instead of a motif placed on a background ā the eye finishes the line beyond the wood.
Both colours are the woods' own; nothing is stained, dyed or painted.
Details ā¾
Woods: Boxwood body with Ebony veneer, responsibly repurposed exotic hardwoods.
Construction: cut veneer, laid and polished back.
Form: oval drop with an angular shape set off-centre.
Pair weight: about 10 g.
Findings are metal alloy. Sold as one pair.
Handcrafted in Kolkata, India.
Styling ā¾
Asymmetric but not loud ā lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear with a modern edge that suits tailoring as readily as a plain saree.
Because the shape sits off-centre, the pair looks different depending on which way the oval turns, which keeps a simple outline from going flat.
Looking after it ā¾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
- Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another ā the edges are where laid wood is most vulnerable.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the dark shape painted on? ā¾
No. It is Ebony veneer ā cut to shape from a leaf-thin sheet, laid onto the Boxwood and polished back. Real wood at its own colour.
Why is the shape off-centre? ā¾
So the piece reads as movement rather than decoration. Running the shape off the edge lets the eye finish the line beyond the wood, which a centred motif cannot do.
Are these comfortable for daily wear? ā¾
Yes. The pair weighs about 10 g and the surface is flush, so there is nothing to catch.
Are both earrings identical? ā¾
Close, but not exactly. Each shape is cut and placed by hand, so it sits slightly differently on one than the other.
Will the colour fade? ā¾
Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
