A long Boxwood teardrop with a slender dark shape laid inside it, tapering like a flame.

Manasa is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.

The outer shape is a long teardrop, rounded at the base and drawn to a point at the top. Inside it sits a second, narrower shape in Ebony veneer — a leaf-thin piece of wood cut to a tapering form and laid onto the Boxwood, then polished back.

Setting a narrow dark shape inside a wider pale one, with an even margin of Boxwood left showing all the way round, makes the earring read as a shape within a shape: a flame in a lamp, a seed in a pod, depending on what you see first. It is the same silhouette twice at two scales, which is why the piece looks resolved rather than decorated.

Styling ▾

Two tones and one simple motif make these easy lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear — there is nothing busy enough to clash with a print, and nothing so plain that the pair disappears.

The long teardrop suits a bare neckline and hair worn up, where the full taper is visible.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the edges are where laid wood is most vulnerable.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.
Delivery and returns ▾

Free shipping on prepaid orders within India. Dispatch in 2–3 working days; delivery 2–3 days to metro cities and 5–7 days elsewhere in India. Please film an unboxing video. It is required for any claim about a damaged, defective or incorrect item, which must be raised within 48 hours of delivery.

Is the dark shape a hole or wood? ▾

Wood. It is Ebony veneer cut to shape and laid onto the Boxwood, then polished flush — not a cut-out, and not painted.

What does veneer mean here? ▾

A very thin leaf of solid wood, cut to shape and laid onto the body beneath it — the method used on instrument cases and fine cabinetry. Keep the piece dry and avoid knocking the edges and it will hold for years.

Are these comfortable for daily wear? ▾

Yes. The pair weighs about 10 g and the teardrop is narrow, so there is nothing broad to swing or catch.

Are both earrings identical? ▾

Close, but not exactly. Each inner shape is cut and placed by hand, so the margin around it varies a little from one to the other.

Will the colour fade? ▾

Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
