A black Ebony square at the ear, and below it a half-round boat banded in Maple and Padauk.
Mahi is made from Maple, Padauk and Ebony, three of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Maple is the pale wood of violin backs and necks; the Padauk is the red hardwood from the same bench; the Ebony is the black wood of fingerboards. All three reach us as offcuts from that work. Read how the wood gets here.
The boat is built from joined woods. Strips are cut and bonded one against the next, then the whole drop is shaped into its curve and polished back as one piece — the bands are joins between species, not marks laid on a surface.
The square above is what separates this pair from the rest of our banded drops, which all hang from a round. A square has corners and a direction; a disc has neither. Hanging a curve from a square sets the two against each other, and the earring reads as more deliberate for it.
Nothing is stained, dyed or painted — the pale, the red and the black are what those three species are.
Details ▾
Woods: Maple, Padauk and Ebony, responsibly repurposed exotic hardwoods.

Form: Ebony square above a banded half-round boat.
Pair weight: about 10 g.
Findings are metal alloy. Sold as one pair.
Handcrafted in Kolkata, India.
Styling ▾
The dark square anchors the pair against black and deep colours, where an all-warm earring can float. These are statement wooden earrings for festive wear that still work with tailoring.
Hair up shows both elements; the square sits close to the lobe and is the part most easily hidden.
Looking after it ▾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight — Padauk's red deepens with light exposure.
- Keep it dry — take it off before washing or swimming.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the corners of the square are the part to protect.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Are the colours painted or stained? ▾
Neither. Each band is a different wood at its own natural colour — Maple pale, Padauk red, Ebony black.
Are the bands laid on the surface? ▾
No. They are joins. Separate pieces of wood are bonded together, then the drop is shaped and polished back as one piece.
Do these work with black clothes? ▾
Yes. The Ebony square gives the pair something dark to sit against, so it reads clearly on black.
Will a drop this broad be heavy? ▾
The pair weighs about 10 g. The same shape in metal would pull on the earlobe within an hour.
Will the colours change over time? ▾
Slightly. Padauk deepens most, Maple and Ebony a little. Kept out of direct sunlight the piece ages evenly.
