A pale Boxwood oval ruled across its lower half with a run of angled dark stripes.

Madhuka is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.

The stripes are Ebony veneer, cut and laid onto the face, then polished back level. Each is a leaf-thin strip of real wood — the colour is the wood's own, not ink.

Several narrow stripes behave differently from one broad band. A single band divides a shape; a run of thin ones reads as shading, closing the lower part of the oval while the upper half stays open. The drop looks weighted at the bottom without anything actually being heavier there.

Setting them at an angle rather than straight across keeps that weighting from looking like a hard line.

Styling ▾

Quiet from a distance, detailed up close — these are lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear with enough texture to notice. Plain cloth suits them; a busy print will fight the stripes.

The pale upper half keeps the pair from reading as dark, which makes them easier with daytime colours than a solid black drop.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the edges are where laid wood is most vulnerable.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Are the stripes painted on? ▾

No. Each stripe is Ebony veneer — a leaf-thin strip of real wood cut and laid onto the Boxwood, then polished back. The colour is the wood's own.

Why are the stripes only on part of the oval? ▾

Because a run of stripes reads as shading rather than pattern when it covers part of a shape. It weights the lower half while the upper stays open, which makes the drop look longer.

Are these comfortable for daily wear? ▾

Yes. The pair weighs about 10 g and the surface is flush, so there is nothing to catch.

Are both earrings identical? ▾

Close, but not exactly. Each stripe is cut and placed by hand, so the spacing varies a little from one to the other.

Will the colour fade? ▾

Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
