A long, slim Boxwood drop with a single band of dark Ebony veneer laid across its upper face.

Kumkuma is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.

The dark band is veneer: a leaf-thin piece of real Ebony, cut to shape and laid onto the Boxwood, then polished back. The colour is the wood's own, not ink or paint, so it cannot be rubbed off.

Placing it high on the drop is the decision that makes the piece. A band through the centre would halve the shape; set near the top it reads as a weight at the shoulder, and the long pale taper below it carries the eye down to the point.

It is one of the narrowest drops in the range, which is what keeps a piece this long comfortable through a working day.

Details ▾

Woods: Boxwood body with Ebony veneer, responsibly repurposed exotic hardwoods.

Construction: cut veneer, laid and polished back.

Form: long tapering drop with a band near the top.

Pair weight: about 10 g.

Findings are metal alloy. Sold as one pair.

Handcrafted in Kolkata, India.

Styling ▾

Long, narrow and almost unmarked — these are lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear that still have the length of an occasion pair. There is no pattern to argue with a print, so a block-printed kurta works as easily as a plain shirt.

Hair up shows the full drop; the slim profile means they still read with hair down.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the edges are where laid wood is most vulnerable.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.
Delivery and returns ▾

Free shipping on prepaid orders within India. Dispatch in 2–3 working days; delivery 2–3 days to metro cities and 5–7 days elsewhere in India. Cash on Delivery is available at selected locations with a ₹50 cash-handling charge. We ship worldwide, with import duties and local taxes payable by the recipient.

Please film an unboxing video. It is required for any claim about a damaged, defective or incorrect item, which must be raised within 48 hours of delivery.

Is the black band painted on? ▾

No. It is Ebony — a wood that is black on its own — cut as a fine veneer and laid onto the Boxwood, then polished back. Real wood, not ink or paint.

What does veneer mean here? ▾

A very thin leaf of solid wood, cut to shape and laid onto the body beneath it — the method used on instrument cases and fine cabinetry. Keep the piece dry and avoid knocking the edges and it will hold for years.

Are long wooden earrings comfortable for daily wear? ▾

These are. The pair weighs about 10 g and the drop is narrow, so there is nothing broad to swing or catch.

Will these go with printed clothes? ▾

Yes. There is almost no pattern on the earring, so nothing competes with a print.

Will the colour fade? ▾

Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
