A short striped bar at the ear, and below it a broad plain teardrop in dark Ebony.

Karanja is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.

Most two-part earrings put the plain element at the top and the decorated one below. Karanja does the reverse. The small upper bar carries all the pattern — bands of pale Boxwood and dark Ebony, the two woods cut and laid together and polished back as one face — and the large shape beneath it is left entirely plain.

It is a better balance than it sounds. Pattern at the top sits close to the face where it is actually seen; a broad unmarked teardrop below gives the eye somewhere to rest and keeps the pair from reading as busy.

Details ▾

Woods: Boxwood and Ebony, responsibly repurposed exotic hardwoods.

Construction: the two woods cut, laid together and polished back.

Form: striped bar above a plain Ebony teardrop.

Pair weight: about 10 g.

Findings are metal alloy. Sold as one pair.

Handcrafted in Kolkata, India.

Styling ▾

The large dark teardrop is what makes this pair work against colour — it behaves like a dark neutral, so a bright yellow, a deep green or a printed saree all sit comfortably with it.

Hair up suits it best, since the striped bar is small and sits close to the lobe where it can be seen.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep it dry — take it off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.
Delivery and returns ▾

Please film an unboxing video. It is required for any claim about a damaged, defective or incorrect item, which must be raised within 48 hours of delivery.

Is the dark teardrop painted black? ▾

No. It is Ebony, a wood that is naturally this colour — dense enough to sink in water and used for violin fingerboards. Nothing is stained or dyed.

Are the stripes printed on? ▾

No. Each band is one of the two woods, cut and laid against the other and polished back. The stripes are wood, so they cannot fade or rub off.

Will a drop this size be heavy? ▾

The pair weighs about 10 g. A teardrop this broad in metal would pull on the lobe by the end of an evening.

Do these work with bright colours? ▾

Particularly well. The large dark teardrop behaves like a neutral, so it sits against strong colour without competing with it.

Will the colour fade? ▾

Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
