A long Boxwood petal with dark veneer cut and laid across it in a running angled design.

Ishvari is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.

The design is cut veneer, laid onto the face. Leaf-thin pieces of Ebony are cut individually to shape, placed onto the Boxwood and then polished back — so the dark areas are real wood at their own colour, not ink or paint.

Cutting each piece separately rather than running straight bands is what allows the pattern to change as it travels down the petal. The shapes shift direction partway, which gives a narrow drop something to do along its length instead of repeating one line from top to bottom.

The petal itself is cut long and narrow, closing to a point — the shape that lengthens the line of the face rather than widening it.

Styling ▾

Narrow enough to be lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear, long enough to carry an evening. Black and pale gold behaves as a neutral, so colour is easy; a busy print is the one thing that will fight the design.

The slim profile keeps them visible with hair worn down.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the edges and the point are the vulnerable parts.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Please film an unboxing video. It is required for any claim about a damaged, defective or incorrect item, which must be raised within 48 hours of delivery.

Is the dark pattern painted on? ▾

No. Each dark area is Ebony veneer — a leaf-thin piece of real wood cut to shape and laid onto the Boxwood, then polished back. The colour is the wood's own and cannot be rubbed off.

What does veneer mean here? ▾

A very thin leaf of solid wood, cut to shape and laid onto the body beneath it — the method used on instrument cases and fine cabinetry. It is what allows each piece of the design to be cut and placed individually. Keep the piece dry and avoid knocking the edges and it will hold for years.

Are these comfortable for daily wear? ▾

Yes. The pair weighs about 10 g and the petal is narrow, so there is nothing broad to swing or catch.

Are both earrings identical? ▾

Close, but not exactly. Each piece of veneer is cut and placed by hand, so the design falls slightly differently on one than the other.

Will the colour fade? ▾

Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
