A long narrow petal, pointed at both ends, striped down its length in pale Boxwood and black Ebony.
Girija is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work ā fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.
The stripes are the two woods themselves, joined. Strips of Boxwood and Ebony are cut and bonded side by side, then shaped and polished back as one piece ā so each line is a join between species rather than a mark on a surface. Nothing is stained, dyed or printed.
Running them down the length rather than across it is what makes the petal read as tall. Stripes across a narrow shape cut it into sections; stripes along it carry the eye from the top point to the bottom in one movement.
It is one of the narrowest shapes we make, which keeps a long drop comfortable and stops it swinging into the neck.

Styling ā¾
Narrow, long and in two neutral tones ā these are lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear that also carry an evening. A plain kurta, a cotton saree or a work shirt all suit them.
The slim profile means they stay visible with hair worn down, where a wide drop would be covered.
Looking after it ā¾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
- Keep it dry ā take it off before washing or swimming.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another ā the points are the most delicate part.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Are the stripes painted on? ā¾
No. Each stripe is one of the two woods, cut and joined to the next and polished back. The colours are the woods' own, so they cannot fade or rub off.
Are these comfortable for daily wear? ā¾
Yes. The pair weighs about 10 g and the petal is narrow, so there is nothing broad to swing or catch.
Will these suit a round face? ā¾
Well. A long narrow drop lengthens the line of the face, where a wide or circular earring widens it.
Are both earrings identical? ā¾
Very close. The grain runs differently through every piece of wood, so the pair is matched rather than duplicated.
Will the colour fade? ā¾
Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
