✋ Every piece is handcrafted, so we can't accept returns for a change of mind.
A crosshatched dome at the ear, and below it a square worked in a basket weave of fine inlaid bands.
Ekakshi is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.
The upper element sits against the lobe as a softly domed square, its face crossed by a fine diagonal grid. Below it hangs the piece that gives Ekakshi its character: a square divided into four quarters, each quarter filled with close parallel bands running at a right angle to the quarters beside it. The pattern is the same one you find in a parquet floor or a woven mat — nothing in it is curved, and the whole effect comes from direction alone.
The bands are inlay, not lines drawn on. Each one is a strip of wood set into a channel cut in the surface, seated, then sanded and polished back until both woods finish level. Run a fingertip across the square and you feel one continuous face, with no ridge where one wood meets the next. It is the slowest way to make a pattern and the only one that cannot wear off, because the pattern goes down into the wood rather than sitting on it.
That construction is also why it changes as you move. Light falling across the square strikes two quarters along the bands and two across them, so one pair of quarters always reads brighter than the other, and they swap as you turn your head.

Styling ▾
Two squares stacked is a deliberately architectural shape — straight edges, right angles, no softening. It reads modern rather than traditional, and it holds its own against structured clothes: a shirt, a jacket, a crisp cotton saree.
Because the pattern is dense, keep the rest simple. Ekakshi is a piece to wear on its own, without a necklace competing at the same scale.
Looking after it ▾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the woven pattern painted on? ▾
No. It is inlay. Every band is a strip of wood set into a channel cut in the surface and polished back level, so the face is smooth to the touch. Because the pattern is wood rather than ink, it cannot fade, scratch off or wear away.
Will they be heavy on my ears? ▾
The pair weighs about 10 g. Two stacked squares this size in metal would be a different proposition entirely; in wood they stay comfortable through a long evening.
Which woods are these? ▾
Boxwood and Ebony. Both colours are the woods' own — nothing is stained or dyed to achieve the contrast.
Can I wear these to the office? ▾
Yes. The shape is geometric and quiet rather than ornamental, so it works with tailoring as easily as with ethnic wear.
Will the colour fade? ▾
Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
