A deep red Padauk square at the ear, and below it a half-round boat banded in Maple and Padauk.
Dharavi is made from Maple, Padauk and Ebony, three of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Maple is the pale wood of violin backs and necks; the Padauk is the red hardwood from the same bench; the Ebony is the black wood of fingerboards. All three reach us as offcuts from that work. Read how the wood gets here.
The boat is built from joined woods. Strips are cut and bonded one against the next, then the whole drop is shaped into its curve and polished back as one piece ā the bands are joins between species, not marks on a surface.
What sets this pair apart from our other boat drops is the square above it. Every other one hangs from a dark element or a pale one; this one hangs from deep red Padauk, the same wood that runs through the bands below. The colour carries from top to bottom instead of contrasting with it, and the whole earring reads warm rather than two-toned.
Nothing is stained, dyed or painted ā the red, the pale and the black are what those three species are.

Styling ā¾
The warmest pair we make ā statement wooden earrings for festive wear that sit naturally with maroon, rust, mustard and cream, and read as a deliberate contrast against deep green or indigo.
Hair up suits them, and the broad boat wants a plain neckline below it.
Looking after it ā¾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight ā Padauk's red deepens with light exposure.
- Keep it dry ā take it off before washing or swimming.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another ā the corners of the square are the part to protect.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the red colour stained or dyed? ā¾
No. That is Padauk's own colour ā the wood comes out of the log this red, with darker streaking through it.
Are the bands laid on the surface? ā¾
No. They are joins. Separate pieces of wood are bonded together, then the boat is shaped and polished back as one piece.
How is this different from your other boat drops? ā¾
The square above is Padauk rather than a dark or pale wood, so the red carries from the top of the earring through to the bands below. It reads warm all the way down instead of two-toned.
Will a drop this broad be heavy? ā¾
The pair weighs about 10 g. The same shape in metal would pull on the earlobe within an hour.
Will the colours change over time? ā¾
Slightly. Padauk deepens most, Maple and Ebony a little. Kept out of direct sunlight the piece ages evenly.
