A long, slim drop in pale Boxwood, stepped down its length with black Ebony veneer.

Devika is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.

The shape is the point. Where most statement earrings go wide, Devika goes long and narrow — a slender column falling from the ear, tapering as it descends. The black runs down it in angular steps rather than a straight stripe, so the eye is led downward in stages instead of all at once.

The black is veneer: a fine leaf of real Ebony, laid onto the Boxwood body and polished back. It is the same technique used on instrument cases and fine furniture, and it is what makes a stepped pattern like this possible — the shapes are cut from the leaf and placed, rather than carved out of solid wood. What you see is Ebony, not stain, not paint and not a printed finish.

It is the most elongating shape in the range. A wide disc or a round drop broadens the line of the face; a narrow vertical does the opposite, which is why this pair suits a rounder face and a shorter neck particularly well.

Styling ▾

Length is what you are buying, so let it show. Hair up, or swept to one side; a high neckline rather than a wide one. Against a saree the drop sits in the gap between the earlobe and the shoulder and keeps that space busy.

Black and pale gold is close to a neutral, which makes this an easy pair to wear with colour — it will not fight a printed fabric the way a patterned earring does.

Looking after it ▾
  • Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep it dry. A veneered surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
  • Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the edges are where a veneer is most vulnerable.
  • Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
  • Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the black part painted? ▾

No. It is Ebony — a wood that is black on its own — laid onto the Boxwood as a fine veneer and polished back. Real wood, not stain, ink or paint. The colour is the wood's and cannot be rubbed off.

What does veneer mean here? ▾

A very thin leaf of solid wood, cut to shape and laid onto the body beneath it — the method used on instrument cases and fine cabinetry. It lets a pattern be built in shapes that would be impractical to cut from solid stock. Keep the piece dry and avoid knocking the edges and it will hold for years.

Are long earrings like these heavy? ▾

Not in wood. The pair weighs about 10 g. The same length in metal would hang with real weight on the lobe; this is the reason the shape works at all.

Will these suit a round face? ▾

Particularly well. A long narrow drop lengthens the line of the face, where a wide or circular earring widens it.

Will the colour fade? ▾

Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
