A long Boxwood teardrop scattered with dark markings that read like animal print.
Darika is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.
The markings are irregular — different sizes, clustered in places and open in others, with no repeat anywhere on the face. That is what makes them read as marking rather than as pattern: a printed repeat announces itself, a scatter does not.
Every marking is wood, laid onto the surface. Each dark shape is cut from Ebony veneer, placed onto the Boxwood one at a time and polished back — which is the only way to build a scatter like this in wood without printing it. The black is the wood's own colour, not ink.
On a narrow teardrop rather than a broad disc, the effect stays wearable: there is enough pale ground showing between the markings to keep the piece from looking crowded.

Styling ▾
A print on the earring wants plain cloth beside it — a solid kurta, a plain saree, a shirt. Against a floral or a block print the two patterns argue.
Black on pale gold keeps it neutral enough to repeat often, which makes these an unusual thing: lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear with a pattern you would normally save for an occasion.
Looking after it ▾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
- Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the edges are where laid wood is most vulnerable.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the print painted on? ▾
No. Each marking is a piece of Ebony cut to shape and laid onto the Boxwood, then polished back. Real wood at its own colour — nothing printed, stained or dyed.
Are the two earrings identical? ▾
No, and they are not meant to be. The markings are placed by hand, so the scatter falls differently on each one.
What should I wear these with? ▾
Plain fabric. A patterned earring and a printed outfit compete; a solid colour lets the markings read.
Are these comfortable for daily wear? ▾
Yes. The pair weighs about 10 g and the teardrop is narrow, so there is nothing broad to swing or catch.
Will the colour fade? ▾
Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
