A woven Boxwood square at the ear, and below it a plain oval hanging free.
Chah is made from Boxwood and Ebony, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.
Most two-part earrings hang the worked element below the plain one. Chah reverses it: the dense woven square sits at the lobe, where it is closest to the face and most visible, and the plain oval swings beneath it as a quiet counterweight.
The weave is veneer, laid onto the square. Leaf-thin strips of wood are cut and placed in blocks set at right angles to each other, then polished back — the method used on instrument cases and fine cabinetry.
Straight edges above, a closed curve below. The two shapes have nothing in common, and that is what keeps the pair from reading as repetitive.

Styling ▾
Detail at the top, calm below — these are lightweight wooden earrings for daily wear that reward a closer look without being busy from a distance.
The plain oval also means the pair works with prints better than a fully worked earring would: there is enough quiet surface to balance a patterned fabric.
Looking after it ▾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
- Keep it dry. A laid surface dislikes prolonged damp, so take these off before washing or swimming.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another — the edges are where laid wood is most vulnerable.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the woven pattern printed on? ▾
No. Each band is wood veneer — a leaf-thin strip cut and laid onto the surface, then polished back. The pattern is wood, so it cannot fade or wear off.
Does the lower oval move? ▾
Yes. It hangs from a ring below the square, so it swings independently as you turn.
Will these go with printed clothes? ▾
Better than a fully patterned earring. The plain oval gives the eye somewhere to rest, so the pair balances a print instead of competing with it.
Are these comfortable for daily wear? ▾
Yes. The pair weighs about 10 g, and the worked square sits flat at the lobe rather than swinging.
Will the colour fade? ▾
Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, the woods darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
