A small pale Boxwood disc at the ear, and below it a broad axe-shaped drop cut from solid Padauk.
Bharati is made from Boxwood and Padauk, two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Padauk is the red hardwood that comes through that bench; the Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable. Read how the wood gets here.
Each element is cut from a single piece of wood. The disc is one piece of Boxwood; the drop is one piece of Padauk. There is no inlay, no veneer, no banding and nothing laid on either surface — the only two colours on the earring are the two species themselves.
The drop is cut to a broad curved edge with the corners drawn up into points, which is why it reads as an axe head rather than a crescent: the weight sits along the outer edge and the shape has direction.
That leaves the Padauk's own figure as the only decoration — a deep orange-red with darker streaks running through it, different in every piece, so no two pairs are the same shade.

Styling ▾
Red against cream, with no pattern at all — these are statement wooden earrings for festive wear that stay simple enough to repeat often. Padauk's warmth sits naturally with maroon, rust, mustard and cream, and reads as a deliberate contrast against indigo or deep green.
Wear with hair up so the full width of the drop is visible.
Looking after it ▾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight — Padauk's red deepens with light exposure.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another; the points are the most delicate part.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

Is the red colour stained or dyed? ▾
No. That is Padauk's own colour — the wood comes out of the log this red. Nothing is stained, dyed or painted.
Is the drop solid wood or layered? ▾
Solid, cut from one piece of Padauk. There is no inlay, no veneer and nothing laid on the surface.
Are these suitable for a festival or a puja? ▾
Yes. The red reads as festive rather than formal, and at about 10 g the pair can be worn through a long day.
Will both earrings look the same? ▾
The shapes will. The colour will vary a little — Padauk's streaking runs differently through every piece of wood.
Will the colour change over time? ▾
Padauk deepens with age and light, which most people prefer. Kept out of direct sunlight the change is slow and even.
