A Boxwood disc laced with fine Ebony lines, hung above a plain polished Ebony oval.
Aparajita is made from two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Ebony is the wood of violin fingerboards and tailpieces. The Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable, in pieces about the size of a pair of earrings. Read how the wood gets here.
The upper disc is Boxwood, cut with a diamond lattice of fine dark lines and polished until the grain shows warm honey beneath them. Below it hangs an Ebony oval, left completely plain — no engraving, no inlay — so the wood itself carries the piece. A metal ring joins the two and lets the oval swing.
Size and weight ▾
The hanging Ebony oval measures 4 cm. The pair weighs about 10 g.
That weight is the whole argument for wood: a piece this size in metal would concentrate real load on one point of the earlobe, which is why bold metal earrings tend to come off halfway through an evening. These stay comfortable through a full working day or a long function.
Findings are metal alloy. Sold as a pair.
The two woods ▾
Ebony. The black hardwood used for violin fingerboards and tailpieces. Dense enough to sink in water, and it takes a polish like stone. The colour is the wood's own; nothing is stained or dyed.
Boxwood. Pale and so close-grained that it holds a cut line a fraction of a millimetre wide, which is why instrument makers use it for fittings. The honey tone is the wood deepened by cutting and polishing, not paint.
Styling ▾
At 4 cm the drop clears the jaw without reaching the shoulder, so it reads as present rather than dramatic. The lattice disc shows as detail up close and as a warm point of light from across a room, which lets the pair work both in a meeting and at a wedding.
Black and honey sit easily against a saree, a kurta, a linen shirt or a plain dress. With an open neckline, let the oval do the work and skip a necklace.
Looking after it ▾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

How long are they? ▾
The hanging Ebony oval measures 4 cm. Added to the stud and the ring above it, the pair sits just below the jawline on most people.
Is the black part painted? ▾
No. The oval is solid Ebony and the lattice lines are Ebony too. Ebony is naturally black. Nothing on this piece is stained, dyed or painted.
Will it be too heavy for my ears? ▾
The pair weighs about 10 g, roughly the weight of two one-rupee coins split across both ears. Most people forget they are wearing them.
Will the colour fade? ▾
Wood deepens rather than fades. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from chemicals, both the Ebony and the Boxwood darken slightly over the years and hold their polish.
Can I wear these every day? ▾
Yes. The woods were selected to survive decades of string tension on an instrument, so daily wear asks very little of them. Wipe them after use and keep them dry.
