A bar of Boxwood and Padauk joined in alternating bands, above a deep red Padauk fan.
Akalpa is made from two of the woods that pass through a Kolkata workshop making parts for musical instruments. The Boxwood is what instrument makers use for fittings and for their own bench tools; the Padauk is the red hardwood that comes through the same bench. Both reach us as offcuts from that work — fully seasoned, dense and stable, in pieces about the size of a pair of earrings. Read how the wood gets here.
The stud is built rather than cut: strips of pale Boxwood and red Padauk joined edge to edge into a single bar, so the stripe runs right through the thickness of the wood. Below it hangs a Padauk fan, its top edge scooped and its lower corners drawn out, polished until the red goes almost to wine. A metal ring joins the two.
Size and weight ▾
The hanging Padauk fan measures 5 cm. The pair weighs about 10 g.
That weight is the whole argument for wood: a fan this size in metal would concentrate real load on one point of the earlobe, which is why bold metal earrings tend to come off halfway through an evening. These stay comfortable through a full working day or a long function.
Findings are metal alloy. Sold as a pair.
The two woods ▾
Padauk. The deep red. The colour is entirely the wood's own and it darkens with age rather than fading. It is never dyed or stained.
Boxwood. Pale and so close-grained that it holds a cut line a fraction of a millimetre wide, which is why instrument makers use it for fittings. The honey tone is the wood deepened by cutting and polishing, not paint.
How the banding is made ▾
Joined banding is slow work. Each strip is cut square, matched for thickness, glued edge to edge and left to set before the block is shaped. Done poorly the joint opens; done properly it outlasts the piece. The stripe is not a surface pattern — cut the bar in half and the bands would run all the way through.
Styling ▾
At 5 cm the fan reaches the line of the jaw and its width carries the colour, so this is the pair to wear when you want the earrings to be the thing people notice.
Red and honey lift anything in cream, white, beige, olive or indigo, and sit naturally with handloom cotton and silk. Against black they read as the only colour in the outfit, which is a good way to wear them. The fan is wide, so an open neckline or hair worn up suits it.
Looking after it ▾
- Keep it in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight.
- Store pieces separately so they do not knock against one another.
- Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
- Avoid perfume, moisturiser, soap and other chemicals.

How long are they? ▾
The hanging Padauk fan measures 5 cm. Added to the banded stud and the ring above it, the pair reaches the line of the jaw on most people.
Is the red colour dyed? ▾
No. Padauk grows that colour. Polishing deepens it and age deepens it further, but nothing is added. The pale bands are Boxwood, also undyed.
Will it be too heavy for my ears? ▾
The pair weighs about 10 g, roughly the weight of two one-rupee coins split across both ears. Most people forget they are wearing them.
Will the red fade? ▾
Padauk deepens rather than fades, moving from bright red towards a darker wine tone over the years. Keeping it out of direct sunlight slows that down if you prefer the brighter colour.
Can I wear these every day? ▾
Yes. The woods were selected to survive decades of string tension on an instrument, so daily wear asks very little of them. Wipe them after use and keep them dry.
