Discover the Art of Mismatched Wooden Earrings: A Bold Fashion Statement

At Chandrakalakriti we believe your accessories should reflect your own personality rather than a rule someone else set. Wearing two different earrings is one of the oldest ways to do that — and with wood, it works better than with almost any other material.

Why wood suits mismatching

Mismatched metal earrings often look like a mistake, because manufactured metal is uniform — two different pieces read as two different products.

Wood does not have that problem. Every piece has its own grain, and no two are identical even within a single pair. So a deliberately mismatched set reads as intentional rather than accidental: the eye already expects variation.

Three other reasons it works:

  • Feather-light. Around 10 g a pair, so you can wear two bold shapes without either lobe complaining.
  • A shared palette. Ebony, Boxwood, Padauk and Maple sit together naturally, because they are all wood. Two different woods still look like they belong.
  • One of a kind. Each piece is handcrafted by skilled artisans in India from responsibly repurposed exotic wood, so no two are exactly alike anyway.

How to mismatch without it looking like an accident

The trick is to keep one thing constant and vary the rest. Change everything at once and it stops reading as a choice.

Same wood, different shape

The easiest place to start. Two Boxwood pieces — one round, one long — share a colour, so the difference reads as playful rather than random.

Same shape, different wood

Two discs, one Ebony and one Boxwood. Black on one side, honey gold on the other. This is the boldest version and the most striking, particularly with a plain outfit.

Same size, different technique

One engraved, one plain. One inlaid, one bare. The scale matches so the pair looks balanced, and the interest is in the surface.

The one rule: keep the weight even

Pair a large piece with a small one and your head tilts toward it all evening. Match the visual weight even when nothing else matches.

What to wear it with

Mismatched earrings need a quiet outfit. A solid saree, a plain kurta, a white shirt. Put them against a print and the whole look becomes noise — there is already enough happening at your ears.

And wear your hair back. If only one earring is visible, the effect disappears entirely.

Where to start

The simplest entry point is two pieces from the same wood family. Browse Boxwood and Ebony for high contrast, or Padauk if you want warmth on both sides.

Our collections are filterable by wood, which makes finding two pieces that share a palette a great deal quicker.

The point of it

Matching is a convention, not a rule. Two earrings that speak to each other without being identical say something a matched pair cannot — and with handcrafted wood, where nothing is identical anyway, it is the more honest way to wear them.
